Course Description
The technical chapters of The Mandt System address the uses of physical interaction, including situations of physical aggression toward one’s self or directed at others. The Mandt System emphasises that all people are to be treated with dignity and respect, especially if physical interaction may be warranted.

Chapter 1: Building Healthy Relationships
Foundational Beliefs, Working as a Team, Dealing with Emotions, Causes of Stress, and Crisis Cycle.
Chapter 2: Building Healthy Communication
Nonverbal Elements in Communication, Vocal Elements in Communication, Verbal Elements in Communication: Strategies for De-escalation.
Chapter 3: Building Healthy Conflict Resolution
Communicating through problem solving, problem solving techniques, perceptions and conflict and understanding conflict cycles.
Chapter 4: Trauma Informed Services
To help people better work with individuals who have experienced trauma.
Chapter 5: Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports
Develops an understanding of positive behaviour support in reducing difficult behaviour. Provides an Understanding of human behaviour to assist with the implementation of behaviour support plans. Focused on “Supporting people, not just their behaviour”.™
Chapter 6: Legal and Liability Issues
Foundational legal and liability issues regarding support.
Chapter 7: Assisting
Body Mechanics, stances, physical supports to assist individuals who may need to be kept safe but are not necessarily violent or aggressive.
Chapter 8: Separating
Physical techniques in separating individuals from holding on to others in cases where there may be a danger to themselves or others.
Chapter 9: Physical Restraints (prerequisite is other Technical chapters)
Physical restraints with a focus on the criteria for when it would be necessary to implement. Focused on medical risks and prohibited practices to increase safety for all involved. Adaptations for persons of small stature/children. All restraints are standing or kneeling.
New instructors will attend 4 days and those recertifying attend 2 days. The conceptual chapters are done after the face to face portion online.
The certification is every two years for instructors. Certification is every year at the student level.
All chapters that do not have any physical skills have a 1 instructor to 20 students ratio. Chapters with physical skills have a ratio of 1 instructor to 10 students.
No, many of the skills are for support or to separate from someone.
No. Mandt is built upon a graded system of alternatives. Chapters 7 and 8 must be taught in order to teach Chapter 9 on restraints.
No one at Mandt is a medical doctor. We feel this is a decision that is left up to the individual and their medical doctor. Mandt will provide a medical doctor descriptions of the physical skills or do a video conference to show the skills so a medical doctor make their best determination. We would ask that a person with any type of high risk pregnancy not attend the training.
No. Organisations must make this determination based on their needs and the regulatory statutes under which they are governed. Mandt will work with organisations to help assess who should be trained in technical skills and at what level.
